A November 2020 article by an Atlantic Council fellow that appeared on the Carnegie Endowment website suggested that the United States shift its policies toward China through a broader and more inclusive vision. With competitive aspects of the US-China relationship at the forefront, the author said that the key moving forward will be to forge a foreign policy that is both realistic and future-looking, instead of reactionary.

Rather than viewing every Chinese geopolitical action as part of a hegemonic, empire-building effort, the article stated that the US should take the lead in the development of an affirmative “post-pandemic order” that combines selective contestation with a shared focus on meeting transnational challenges.

As the author noted, there are many overarching issues that impact people of all nations, such as macroeconomic instability, climate change, and the pandemic itself. Nationalist currents do not encourage the kind of international cooperation and collective action necessary to overcome these challenges, which will require having both the US and China at the forefront.
